Board-certified Neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders with First Physicians Group of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System

Dr. Dean Sutherland is a board-certified Neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders with First Physicians Group of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System in Sarasota, Florida. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology with the Florida State University College of Medicine in Sarasota.  He received his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine.  He was awarded both a Master’s Degree (1991) and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (1994) from Florida State University. While teaching and directing the Human Neuroanatomy Laboratory course at Florida State University, Dr. Sutherland became fascinated with the clinical aspects of neurological disease, which prompted him to attend medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine (M.D., 1998) in Gainesville, FL.  After graduating from medical school, he was employed as a resident in Neurology and eventually Chief Resident at the University of Florida. 

Dr. Sutherland is a published researcher with numerous articles appearing in peer-reviewed publications on topics including the motor cortex, movement disorders, the auditory system and the visual system. 

Dr. Sutherland was the Founder and Director of the Southeastern Center for Parkinson Disease, and also served as the Medical Director for Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s from 2008-2016 and currently serves on the Neuro Challenge Medical Advisory Committee.
